  22. You can just install gkermit on the Linux machine, and a kermit capable 
  23. terminal emulator on the Microsoft Windows machine. (I think TeraTerm, 
  24. PuTTY, or Reflections would suit this.)

  30. gkermit is available on most Linux boxes. There is not problem here.

  34. You could just use a crossover network cable, if there is no RS232 port 
  35. on the machine.

  40. Files created in Microsoft Windows may have CRLF line ends, whereas on 
  41. Linux based systems, they have just LF line ends.

  43. There is an ambiguity in the RTF standard, which means that RTF files 
  44. created on Microsoft Windows may not be readable on GNU/Linux based 
  45. systems, even though the files are to the standards stated.

  50. Line ending can sometimes be manipulated by the terminal emulator, 
  51. though translation of RTF files would not be transparent.

  53. I normally just convert received text files to the appropriate format.

  55. I stopped using RTF, due to compatiblity problems with this format, and 
  56. the open source editor not being as mature as Atlantis Nova, which was 
  57. the RTF editor of choice on Microsoft Windows based systems.

  59. I now use Abiword on both Microsoft Windows and on GNU/Linux, and this 
  60. has made documents more portable between platforms, that the RTF 
  61. documents.

  63. You could however run Atlantis Nova in Wine, if you wanted to continue 
  64. using the RTF format.
